Case Study: Michelin Uses Virtual Environment to Teach Complex Material
Michelin created hands-on workshops in Second Life to teach IT team members about
enterprise architecture after traditional training methods fell short of expectations. IT,
learning and development (L&D) professionals, as well as business managers who need
to teach complex subjects, particularly to non-specialists, can benefit from Michelin’s
experience.Key Findings
- Getting people to absorb knowledge poses the greatest challenge for L&D managers.
- Michelin used the virtual environment for an appropriate purpose, linked the virtual
environment to the company’s real resources and made sure the new technology did not
hinder the trainees.- 98% of the learners consider that Second Life is a “very appropriate” or “appropriate”
medium for training on enterprise architecture.- The total cost of the program was not much different from traditional classroom training
Recommendations
- Do not use a virtual environment simply to reduce training costs, but don’t let cost keep
you from implementing a virtual environment where it makes sense.- Tailor the virtual environment to the roles of the learners and the material they need to
be taught.- Blend the virtual and real worlds for maximum impact and retention.
